YAA Health Division's Alcohol and Other Drugs Principle

Increased risk factors often unique to homeless young people result in higher rates of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug consumption

Why Alcohol and Other Drugs?

The Living Well study of the health of homeless young people in Melbourne in 2001 indicated that rates of use of illicit substances, alcohol and cigarettes were higher than those statistics reported by mainstream young people in the National Household Drug Survey.

Drugs, both legal and illicit can cause long term harm to young people.

Young people may feel pressured to take drugs or drink from their friends, or from the culture perpetuated in Australia in which drinking is linked to celebration, rites of passage and sports.

Working with alcohol and other drugs is supported by the NSW Youth Action Plan 2006-2016.

What is YAA Planning

YAA plans to adress the issue of alcohol and other drugsfor frontline staff in a number of ways. Working with exisiting services to build effective refferal pathways, and keeping workers informed of information and resources they can use is an important first step.

During 2010 we will be putting together our Health Action Plan and identifying ways we can support the youth work sector on this issue.
